Questions

What is Open Monograph Press, and who is it for?

Open Monograph Press (OMP) is free, open-source software from the Public Knowledge Project (PKP) for publishing scholarly books, monographs and edited volumes. It manages the whole process, from submission and peer review to copyediting, production and an online catalogue. It suits university presses, academic publishers, research institutes and societies.

How is OMP different from OJS and OPS?

All three come from PKP. OMP is for books, with chapters, series and a catalogue. OJS is for journals, with issues and articles. OPS is for preprints shared before peer review. Many institutions run more than one, and we work with all three.

Can OMP publish open access and paid books?

Yes. Books and chapters can be fully open, open after an embargo, or restricted. OMP can also link each format to a bookshop or distributor, and exports ONIX metadata for distribution. We set up the model your press uses.

How long does it take?

A basic installation and configuration takes 1 to 2 weeks. A standard setup with a custom theme and workflow usually takes 3 to 4 weeks, and complex projects with migration and custom features 6 to 8 weeks. Your quote has the timeline.

Can you move our existing catalogue into OMP?

Yes. We bring in books, chapters, authors, metadata and files from spreadsheets, old websites or other systems, check them, and organise them into series and categories.

Can OMP match our press's branding?

Yes. We build a custom theme with your colours, logo and layout, mobile-friendly, and add custom plugins if you need features beyond OMP's standard set, all upgrade-safe.

Do you provide training and support?

Yes. Training on Google Meet for editors, reviewers and authors, short guides for your setup, and support after launch by the hour or on a monthly plan.

How much does it cost?

OMP itself is free, with no licence fees. Our work is quoted after a free consultation, with one fixed price plus 18% GST. Crossref membership for DOIs, if you use it, is paid by you directly to Crossref.

Do you provide hosting?

No. We don't sell hosting. OMP runs on hosting or a server in your press's name; we tell you what it needs, set it up, and look after OMP on it.
