A journal website reaches a far larger audience than print, and every article gets its own page that search engines and readers can find.
Google Scholar Indexing
OJS has built-in support for Google Scholar indexing, as long as the site is current, secure and complete.
ISSN Compatible
OJS is accepted for ISSN applications: the journal's details, policies and editorial board sit where ISSN centres expect them.
DOI Integration

Editorial Workflow
Submission, peer review, copyediting and publishing in one journal management system, with roles for every member of the team.
Indexing Databases
Scopus, DOAJ, PubMed and others each have their own criteria; a well-run OJS website is the technical base for all of them.

What is OJS (Open Journal System)?
Open Journal Systems (OJS) is an open-source software application for managing and publishing scholarly journals. Originally developed and released by PKP (Public Knowledge Project) in 2001 to improve access to research, it is the most widely used open-source journal publishing platform in existence. Learn more in our OJS knowledge base.
What is the work of OJS?
OJS runs the whole journal: article submission, peer review, copyediting, publishing issues and articles, and the metadata that indexing services and DOI providers need. It provides the technical infrastructure for open access, peer-reviewed publishing. Explore our OJS website design & development to get started.
What OJS services do you offer?
Our OJS services cover the whole life of a journal: OJS website design & development, the OJS upgrade service to OJS 3.5, the OJS Support Bundle support plans, OJS customization, OJS training & guidance, and OJS installation on your shared hosting, VPS or server. We also offer the Journal Certificate System, ready-made OJS plugins, and services for OMP, OPS and DSpace.
How can an author submit an article on OJS?
Authors create an account, log in and follow the submission steps: choose a section, upload the manuscript files, enter the metadata (title, abstract, keywords and authors) and confirm. Editors can also add published articles directly: read our guide to the Quick Submit plugin.
What is the latest version of OJS?
OJS 3.5 is PKP's current long-term support (LTS) release and needs PHP 8.2 or later. OJS 3.3 is supported until at least 1 January 2027. If your journal runs OJS 3.4 or older, plan an upgrade. Read the latest version of OJS: what you need to know.
What is a journal publication website?
A journal publication website presents your journal online: issues, articles, policies, the editorial board and a submission system, reaching a much larger audience than print. With our OJS website services your editorial team gets a hassle-free, end-to-end journal management system. Get started with our OJS website design service.
Why should publishers invest in a journal website?
Readers, authors and indexing services find journals online. A professional journal website makes every article discoverable, supports Google Scholar, DOIs and ISSN requirements, and runs submissions and peer review in one place, so the journal grows beyond what print alone can reach. Talk to us about your journal website.
Is OJS an ISSN accepted website system?
Yes. OJS is accepted for ISSN applications; you only need to meet the ISSN centre's requirements, such as a complete website with the journal's details, policies and editorial board. We set up OJS with those in mind. Read ISSN explained: a complete guide.
Does OJS help with indexing in Google Scholar?
Yes. OJS has built-in support for Google Scholar indexing. Google Scholar also expects an up-to-date and secure website, DOIs, an ISSN, original (plagiarism-free) articles, and verified publication and editorial board details. Read how to get indexed by Google Scholar using OJS and why journals fail indexing applications.
Can you upgrade my OJS from version 2.x to 3.x?
Yes. Our OJS upgrade service moves journals from OJS 2.x and older 3.x versions to OJS 3.5, with a full backup and a test upgrade first, so articles, users and settings arrive intact. Get your price on the OJS upgrade page, or read the OJS 2.x to 3.5 and OJS 3.3 to 3.5 guides.
Do you provide OJS training for editorial teams?
Yes. OJS training & guidance is one-on-one over Google Meet or Zoom, for journal managers, editors and reviewers: workflow settings, submissions, peer review, DOIs, publishing and issue management. For self-learning, see our OJS settings guides.
What is DOI and how does OJS support it?
A DOI (Digital Object Identifier) is a permanent identifier for a journal article. OJS supports several DOI providers, including Crossref and DataCite. Read understanding DOIs, DOI providers: an overview and what DOI providers charge.
How can I get my journal indexed in DOAJ?
DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals) looks at your open access policy, editorial quality and publication ethics, and expects a complete website. OJS provides the technical base. Read DOAJ indexing requirements and our list of journal indexing databases.
How much do OJS website services cost?
OJS itself is free and open source. For our work, a new OJS journal website gets one clear price after a free consultation; OJS upgrades start at ₹3,000 and OJS support plans at ₹999 a month (billed yearly). All prices are plus 18% GST, with a GST invoice.
Do you provide OJS hosting?
We don't sell or resell hosting. OJS runs on your own shared hosting, VPS or cloud server, so you stay in control. We help you choose (shared hosting or a VPS), install OJS on it, and set up SSL, email delivery and backups.
Can you move my OJS journal to a new server?
Yes. We migrate OJS journals between shared hosting, VPS and cloud servers with the files, database and settings intact, and can upgrade OJS at the same time. See website migration.
Are you part of PKP?
No. OJS is developed by the Public Knowledge Project (PKP). Altechmind is an independent company that sets up, customizes, upgrades and supports OJS for journals.
