How to Get Your OJS Journal into Google Scholar: A Practical Checklist
A practical, OJS-specific checklist for getting your articles into Google Scholar, and how to check they’re there.
On this page
Google Scholar has no application form for journals: it finds them by crawling. OJS already does most of the technical work, but a theme change, a heavy PDF or a blocked page can quietly keep your articles out. This checklist covers the OJS side. For Google Scholar’s rules in general, see Google Scholar indexing requirements.
1. Keep the citation meta tags
OJS adds bibliographic meta tags (such as citation_title, citation_author and citation_pdf_url) to every article page through its Google Scholar plugin. Check it’s enabled under Settings → Website → Plugins, and if you use a custom theme, open an article page’s source and confirm the citation_ tags are there.
2. One article, one page
Each article needs its own page with its title, authors and full abstract, and its own PDF. Google Scholar can’t index several papers in one PDF, or one paper split over several files. OJS works this way by default; don’t upload whole issues as one PDF.
3. Make the PDFs readable
- Text-based PDFs, not scans: Google Scholar must be able to read the text.
- The title in large type on the first page, followed by the authors.
- A reasonable file size. Compress images; Google’s older publisher guidance mentions 5 MB.
4. Let Google crawl the journal
- Article pages, abstracts and the issue archive must be reachable without logging in.
- Your
robots.txtmustn’t block article or download pages. - The site must load reliably. Frequent downtime or very slow pages hurt crawling.
- Keep stable addresses. If articles move, redirect the old ones.
5. Complete metadata
Full author names (spelled the same way every time), the publication date, volume, issue and pages, and references all help Google Scholar match citations to your articles. DOIs help too.
How to check you’re indexed
- Search Google Scholar for an article title in quotation marks.
- Try the operator
source:with your journal’s name, for examplesource:"Journal of Example Studies". - New journals usually appear weeks to a few months after publishing. If nothing shows after a few months, work through the checklist again.
No one can guarantee inclusion in Google Scholar: Google decides what it indexes. Anyone promising guaranteed or instant indexing for a fee is overselling.
Menu names move a little between OJS 3.3, 3.4 and 3.5, and some themes and plugins add their own options. If a setting isn’t where this guide says, check PKP’s Learning OJS guide for your version. This guide is independent and not endorsed by PKP.

Questions
How long does Google Scholar take to index an OJS journal?
Usually a few weeks to a few months after articles are published, as long as the site meets the requirements and can be crawled.
Do I need to submit my journal to Google Scholar?
No. There’s no form for journals; Google Scholar finds and indexes them by crawling.
Why are my OJS articles not in Google Scholar?
Common causes: a theme that removes the citation meta tags, scanned or oversized PDFs, pages blocked by robots.txt or a login, and an unreliable site.
Does OJS add Google Scholar meta tags automatically?
Yes, through the Google Scholar plugin, which is on by default. Some custom themes remove them, so check the page source.
